Ewan never intended to join the NSTA -- in fact, he has always been a little suspicious of the Agency, and isn't quite sure that he agrees with its principles. However, after graduating from college with a Masters of Science in Astrophysics, he had a hard time finding employment. With his student loans coming due, he ended up at the Agency through a rather strange series of events. He decided to join, despite his personal misgivings (after seeing the salary), and was hired on as a Field Agent. When it came time to choose a RISAnet ID, he chose "Flashfire", for reasons he refuses to explain.

Even though he hasn't been in the NSTA long, Flashfire has already gotten a reputation as an elite agent. His knowledge of astrophysics make him uniquely qualified to operate the KALI Defense System, and his martial arts training gives him an edge in some of the more violent aspects of his job. He normally prefers solo missions, but has been working with Delirium lately, much to his annoyance.

At home, he is normally very reserved -- a trait that probably comes from having grown up in Scotland. He doesn't like to bring attention to what he does for a living; he hasn't even told his girlfriend, Ariana, that he's an Agent -- but that may be because she's a rabid anti-NSTA activist. They were brought together, in part, by Flashfire's cat, Quasar, whom he spoils rotten.

Outwardly, Flashfire still professes reservations about the Agency and its intentions. Deep inside, however, he actually enjoys his work (although he refuses to acknowledge this, even to himself). He would still rather be working at NASA or JPL, but would have a hard time choosing if offered a new job now.
