KALI Defense System

KALI Satellite

The KALI(Krypton / Argon Laser Impulse) System Defense satellite network is the most fearsome weapon in the NSTA's arsenal. It consists of 16 satellites, each armed with a 1-terawatt Krypton / Argon chemical laser, targeted by the integrated GPS system. Each agent with KALI firing rights is able to completely control all aspects of the system, including beam type, width and intensity. The targeting system is also fully controlled by each agent, and is accurate to within 3 inches.

Once an agent has initiated the firing process, another agent cannot access that same KALI satellite until the process is complete or has been terminated. To limit conflicts, at least 2 KALI satellites are available from any point on Earth at any given time. Fortunately, the use of the KALI system is very rare, and a conflict has never occurred.

The firing process itself is very complex, requiring an agent's full attention for up to 30 seconds as the request is authenticated, options set, target acquired, and the final firing command approved. After each firing, the laser requires approximately 1 minute to recharge, depending on intensity and firing duration. Because of the type of laser used, each satellite has a limited amount of charges available before it must be refueled. Again, the number varies depending on the intensity and duration of each charge, but is estimated at around 25.

Because of the destructive potential of this weapon, the security measures surrounding it are some of the most sophisticated ever designed. The KALI system has never been compromised, and after every non-test firing of the system there is a full investigation of the incident by the Branch Commanding Officer. Misuse of KALI firing rights is grounds for immediate dismissal, and possibly even a criminal case, depending on the severity of the misconduct.
